Three Sea Dogs were named today to the Eastern Division squad for next month’s Eastern League All-Star game. Pitcher Stephen Fife and second baseman, Nate Spears won the honors in fan balloting, while third baseman Ray Chang, the Dogs’ leading hitter, was selected by sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the Double-A circuit.

This year’s mid-summer classic takes place on Wednesday, July 14th at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg (Senators) PA.

Spears notched a full season of Triple-A ball with the Iowa Cubs in ’09, before signing as a free agent with the Red Sox organization last December. Currently the Eastern League walks leader with 53, Spears tops Portland in on-base percentage at .397. Among active players he also has the team lead in homers with six.

Fife has thrown the most innings (70.1) for the Sea Dogs, and is 4-1 with a 3.84 ERA in 13 starts. Baseball America ranks him #17 among all Boston prospects.

Torrid at the plate for most of June, Chang has cooled of late, but still leads all Sea Dogs hitters – and 8th in the league – with a .302 average. He’s also tops in doubles (19) and slugging (.437).

Fenway Dreams sat down recently with the Kansas City, MO native and former San Diego Padre farmhand now in his sixth season of pro ball. Here’s that interview…
