Might as well hold the draft here…

Dominant pitching and timely hitting led the West over the East. Some will remember the final score (5-0), but that’s pretty much all most fans who weren’t in attendance will recall when the subject surfaces over the cheese dip about this week’s Cape Cod Baseball League All Star Game in Boston.

Pity. They missed the point entirely. The game, showcased for the second straight year in the foreground of Fenway Park’s Green Monster, was the coming out party for the next generation of Major League phenoms. Ask any big league scout. The Cape Cod League is America’s foremost incubator lab for hatching baby superstars. The biggest men on campus play here every summer. Next year some of them will be top draft picks.

Good as they are, these kids are amateurs, afterall. To turn pro they must first catch the eyes of MLB talent hunters, many of whom camp out on the Cape between June and August hoping for a glimpse of – and signed contract with – the next big thing. At Fenway Park last Wednesday night there were 2 1/2 times as many scouts on hand, as there are MLB teams.

Steve WeissmanVeteran sportswriter, author and the Boston Baseball Examiner for Examiner.com, Steve Weissman was on the field, talking with players, coaches and a couple of Cape League legends, ‘Framingham Lou’ Merloni, and Bobby Valentine, long given rock star status in Japan. Lively conversations ensued and Steve captured them for you.

Sit back and dream along with the very best college players in the land. Enjoy Fenway Dreams: The Prequel!
