Bosox future shines bright in Portland

Baseball America survey finds Boston is loaded at Double-A

by Ken on August 25, 2010

The ballots are in. Red Sox Nation now knows what ‘Dogs fans have been nudging each other about all season. There’s some bonafide Grade A talent here. While these kids may not be playoffs-bound, for five of them a genuine shot at The Show looms on the not-to-distant horizon. Their skipper, Arnie Beyeler’s fortunes are looking up, too.

Baseball America’s annual Best Tools survey of Eastern League managers gave the nod to Beyeler as “Best Manager Prospect,” and found 3B Ray Chang, SS Jose Iglesias, 1B Anthony Rizzo to be the “Best Defenders” at their positions. CF Che-Hsaun Lin was named “Best Outfielder.” In addition, 2B Nate Spears was recognized for “Best Strike Zone Judgement.” Spears leads the EL in walks, with an OBP hovering near .400.

Rizzo, who just turned 21, also can rake. He tops all Boston farm hands in HRs (23) and RBI (91) for the season, split between High-A Salem and (mostly) Double-A Portland.

In fact, Baseball America’s Jim Callis, the guy who’s been driving the Lars Anderson bandwagon, now believes Rizzo, not the struggling Anderson, will be manning first base in Boston in a year or so.

And wait until you hear how high Jim is on the 20 year-old Iglesias!

It’s all in this month’s podcast. Hope you enjoy it!
